The addition carries no error margin. Worked example: $6.00 materials + $3.00 labor + $1.00 trims + $0.50 finishing + $0.80 freight + $0.60 duty = $11.90 unit cost. At a 55% target margin that solves to 11.90 ÷ 0.45 = $26.44. The only numbers that need real values are yours — supplier and logistics quotes against your tech pack.

This calculator lets you choose: leave the freight and duty fields empty to read an FOB-style unit cost, or fill them in to reach a landed cost. COGS is simply the total of whichever per-piece costs you decide to include.

Which costs should I include in a garment's unit cost?

Include only costs that repeat on every piece: materials or yarn, cut-make-trim labor, trims and labels, finishing and packing, inbound freight per unit, import duty per unit and any overhead or QC you allocate per garment. Keep one-off costs out — tooling, pattern and grading, sampling rounds and artwork don't change with volume, so they belong in a break-even calculation as fixed costs, not in the per-unit COGS. Mixing the two inflates your unit cost and hides your real margin.

How do I set a selling price from my unit cost?

Divide the unit cost by one minus your target margin: price = unit cost ÷ (1 − margin/100). A $11.90 unit cost at a 55% target margin solves to 11.90 ÷ 0.45 = $26.44. The target margin has to stay below 100%, since at 100% the denominator hits zero and no finite price exists.
