Gauge sets the weight

Fabric weight is the biggest lever after size. A chunky 3–5gg knit runs near 450 GSM, mid 7–8gg near 300, fine 12–14gg near 200 — so a chunky sweater can use over twice the yarn of a fine one at the same size.
