Beyond wool and cashmere lies a world of specialty fibres — each with a distinct character that can make a collection unmistakable.
Specialty fibres are how a knit collection gains personality. They cost more and are often blended rather than used pure, but a well-chosen specialty fibre is a signature.
The key specialty fibres
- Alpaca — warm, lightweight and silky, with beautiful drape and a naturally hypoallergenic, low-lanolin feel. Excellent for soft, fluid sweaters.
- Mohair — from Angora goats; lustrous, with a signature “halo” of fibre and a lightweight warmth. Great for statement, textured pieces.
- Angora — from rabbits; exceptionally soft and fluffy (source responsibly).
- Yak & camel — warm, characterful, with rich natural tones; a distinctive alternative to cashmere.
- Silk blends — add sheen, strength and drape to wool or cashmere.
- TENCEL™ blends — add softness and a sustainable angle.
Most specialty fibres shine in a blend: a touch of mohair or silk in a merino base lifts the whole yarn — adding halo, lustre or drape without the full cost or fragility of the pure fibre.
