GPSR Explained for Knitwear
The EU's General Product Safety Regulation reaches ordinary apparel, including knitwear. Here's what it asks of brands and where a manufacturer fits in.
The GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) is the EU's baseline safety framework for consumer products that aren't covered by more specific rules — which includes most apparel and knitwear. It raises the bar on traceability, documentation and who is accountable for a product placed on the EU market.
What it asks for
- A responsible economic operator in the EU. Products need a manufacturer, importer or authorised “responsible person” established in the EU who can be contacted and held accountable.
- Technical documentation. A file describing the product, materials and the safety considerations behind it.
- Traceability. Clear identification of the product and its supply chain — batch/model identifiers, manufacturer and importer details.
- Labelling & contact information so consumers and authorities can identify and reach the responsible party.
Key point for brands: the “responsible person” in the EU is the brand/importer's obligation, not the overseas factory's. Plan for who fills that role before you ship into the EU.
