Merino comes from Merino sheep, prized for an unusually fine fibre. That fineness is the whole story: it's what makes merino soft against skin, light for its warmth, and resistant to the itch people associate with coarser wools.
Fineness in microns
Wool is measured in microns (fibre diameter) — lower is finer and softer. Extra-fine merino (around 17.5 microns or below) is soft enough for next-to-skin layers, while standard merino suits everyday sweaters. The micron count is worth specifying when softness is critical.
