“Sustainable” only means something if it's documented. Here are the credible yarn options for lower-impact knitwear — and how to make a claim you can actually back up.
Sustainability claims invite scrutiny. The way to make them safely is to anchor each one to a recognised, certified material with traceability — not a vague adjective. Here are the main credible options.
The credible options
- Organic cotton (GOTS) — grown without synthetic pesticides, certified through the chain.
- Recycled polyester / wool (GRS, RCS) — verified recycled content from post-consumer or post-industrial waste.
- Responsible wool (RWS) — wool from farms meeting animal-welfare and land-management criteria.
- TENCEL™ Lyocell — a wood-pulp fibre made in a closed-loop process, soft and breathable.
- Recycled cashmere & regenerated fibres — increasingly available for a circular story.
The trade-offs (be realistic)
Certified and recycled yarns can cost more, have longer lead times, and sometimes a slightly different hand than virgin equivalents. None of that is a reason to avoid them — just to plan for it and choose where the impact and the story matter most.
Avoid greenwashing: only claim what the certificate covers. “Made with GRS-certified recycled polyester” is defensible; “eco-friendly” alone isn't. Keep the supplier documentation that backs every claim.
