How to Choose a Knitwear Manufacturer
The right factory is a multi-year partner; the wrong one is a season of missed deliveries. Use this 12-point checklist before you commit.
Choosing a knitwear manufacturer is one of the highest-leverage decisions a brand makes. Price matters, but it's rarely the thing that goes wrong — communication, transparency and fit-for-purpose do. Run any candidate through this checklist.
The 12-point checklist
- 1. MOQ fit. Does their minimum match how you actually launch, and how does it apply — per colour, or per colour and per size? A minimum that's wrong for your plan can sink a first run.
- 2. Technique & gauge match. Can they do your construction — fully-fashioned, WHOLEGARMENT, intarsia, jacquard — in your gauge (3–14gg)?
- 3. Yarn sourcing. Do they source the fibres and counts you need, with certified options (OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS)?
- 4. Sample quality. Order a sample before you commit. The first sample tells you more than any sales deck.
- 5. Lead time honesty. Are their timelines realistic and clearly stated, or vague?
- 6. Compliance. Can they document REACH, CPSIA, GPSR for your market?
- 7. Communication. Do they answer clearly and quickly, in a language you share? Slow, foggy replies pre-sale only get worse.
- 8. Transparency. Is the work in-house, or quietly subcontracted? Ask directly what they make themselves.
- 9. IP & NDA. Will they sign an enforceable NDA? How strong is design protection in their country?
- 10. Pricing clarity. Is the quote itemised and comparable, or a single opaque number? Learn to brief precisely so quotes are like-for-like.
- 11. Factory access. Can you visit, or at least get a live video tour? Access signals confidence.
- 12. Track record. Who do they make for, and how long have they run? Steady experience beats a slick website.
Red flags
- No sample offered, or pressure to order bulk before sampling.
- Evasiveness about what's made in-house vs subcontracted.
- Quotes that change without explanation, or large pre-payment demands from an unknown party.
- Slow, unclear communication during the courtship phase.
The single best test: order one sample and watch how they communicate through it. Quality and clarity in that one round predict the whole relationship.
