Knitwear Production Lead Times Explained
“How long will it take?” is the first question every brand asks. Here's a realistic end-to-end knitwear timeline — and how to plan backward from your launch date.
Lead time is where launches succeed or slip. Knitwear has a few stages that can't be rushed without cutting corners, so the key is to plan the calendar backward from your in-store or drop date, not forward from when you happen to be ready.
The end-to-end timeline
- Tech pack review — ~48 hours. We confirm feasibility, yarn options and indicative pricing.
- Sampling — 10–14 days per round. Usually two to three rounds to an approved PP sample. See the sampling process.
- Bulk production — 45–60 days. After PP approval, depending on order size and yarn availability.
- Shipping — varies by mode. Truck to the EU is ~5–7 days; ocean to the US East Coast ~12–14 days.
Rule of thumb: from approved tech pack to goods landed, budget roughly 3–4 months for a first style (sampling included). Reorders of an approved style skip most of sampling and move much faster.
What drives lead time
- Yarn availability. Stock yarns ship fast; specialty or custom-dyed colours add mill lead time.
- Complexity. Multi-colour intarsia, jacquard and unusual constructions take longer to program and knit than a clean jersey or rib.
- Order size. Larger runs occupy machines longer — but per-unit efficiency improves.
- Season & capacity. Peak pre-season windows fill up; booking early protects your slot.
- Sampling rounds. The biggest variable you control — a complete tech pack and tight feedback keep this short.
Plan backward from launch
Take your launch date and subtract: shipping transit, 45–60 days bulk, a buffer for 2–3 sampling rounds, and a few days for the tech pack review. That tells you when to start. Most slipped launches come from starting forward (“we'll see how it goes”) instead of backward from a fixed date.
How to compress it
- Submit a complete tech pack — the single biggest time-saver.
- Choose stock or readily available yarns where possible.
- Batch sample feedback into one round.
- Book capacity early for seasonal peaks.
- Pick the right ship mode — truck for the EU is far faster than ocean from Asia.
