Lower-Impact Knitwear: A Checklist
Sustainability in knitwear isn't one switch — it's a series of choices. Here's a practical checklist a brand can actually act on, and document.
You don't have to do everything at once. Each item below lowers impact and, crucially, is something you can document — which is what makes a claim credible.
The checklist
- Choose certified or recycled yarns. Organic (GOTS), recycled (GRS), responsible wool (RWS) — see sustainable yarns.
- Use knit-to-shape construction. Fully-fashioned or WHOLEGARMENT cuts cutting waste close to zero.
- Design for durability. A garment that lasts is the most sustainable one — right yarn grade, ply and finishing reduce pilling and wear.
- Keep colourways disciplined. Each colour is a yarn minimum; fewer, stronger colours mean less leftover yarn.
- Right-size the run. A sensible MOQ (250) lets you avoid overproduction and dead stock — overproduction is a major hidden impact.
- Source from a traceable, single-site chain. Short, transparent supply chains are easier to verify.
- Get the care label right. Good care guidance extends garment life.
- Keep the documentation. Certificates and traceability turn intentions into verifiable claims.
Start where it matters most: for most knit brands, the biggest wins are certified yarns + knit-to-shape waste reduction + not overproducing. Do those three well before chasing the rest.
