Common Knitwear Sourcing Mistakes
Most sourcing pain is avoidable. These are the mistakes we see brands make most often — and the simple fix for each.
Nobody gets every detail right on their first collection. But a handful of mistakes cause most of the delays, cost overruns and disappointing samples. Avoid these and you're ahead of the curve.
The mistakes
- A vague tech pack. No gauge, no stitch, “wool” with no count. The fix: a complete tech pack — it's the biggest single lever on quote accuracy and sample quality.
- Ignoring the MOQ maths. Forgetting that MOQ is per colour. The fix: plan colourways against the real total.
- Choosing on price alone. The lowest quote often excludes freight, duty or re-sampling. The fix: compare like-for-like.
- Skipping the sample. Committing to bulk off a photo. The fix: always sample first — it predicts the whole relationship.
- Unrealistic timelines. Starting forward instead of backward from a launch date.
- No compliance check. Discovering REACH/CPSIA needs after production. The fix: flag your market early.
- Poor communication fit. If replies are slow and foggy pre-sale, they won't improve. The fix: judge communication during sampling.
- No NDA. The fix: get an enforceable NDA signed before sharing designs.
The meta-mistake: rushing the front end (tech pack, manufacturer fit, samples) to “save time”. That's exactly where time is saved or lost.
