How to Start a Knitwear Brand
Turning a knitwear idea into a real, sellable collection is a clear path once you know the order of operations. Here's the practical version.
Plenty of great knit brands started exactly where you are. The difference between the ones that launch and the ones that stall is usually sequencing — doing the right things in the right order. Here's that order.
The steps
- 1. Define your niche. What knit, for whom, at what price? A clear point of view beats a broad catalogue.
- 2. Design your pieces. Sketches, references, the fit and feel you want. You bring the design — this is pure OEM / private label.
- 3. Build a tech pack. Translate the design into specs — see how to create one.
- 4. Find a manufacturer that fits. Match MOQ, technique and gauge — use the checklist.
- 5. Set a realistic budget. Account for sampling, the MOQ per colour, trims and shipping.
- 6. Sample, then produce. Refine through sampling, approve, and run bulk.
- 7. Launch small, learn, expand. Start with a minimum viable collection and grow on reorders.
Reality check: budget roughly 3–4 months from approved tech pack to landed goods for a first style, and plan colourways against the MOQ maths. Start narrow — a tight first drop you can fund and sell beats an ambitious one you can't.
You don't need everything figured out
A complete tech pack and big capital aren't prerequisites to start the conversation. Send a sketch, a reference garment or a brief, and we'll tell you what's feasible and what's missing. See how to source knitwear step by step, or request a quote.
